What is Star Wars Battlefront 2?
Star Wars Battlefront 2 is a first person shooter (with third person option) that takes you to a galaxy far, far away. In the single player story mode, you'll take on the role of Iden Versio, leader of the elite Imperial Commando unit, Inferno Squad. Set in the period between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, you'll play through a variety of both on foot, and vehicle based levels, as the unit face some tough choices in the wake of the Death Star II's destruction. In multiplayer, meanwhile, the game takes in the events of all three "eras" of Star Wars, from the prequel trilogy all the way up to the very latest instalment, The Last Jedi, as you fight battle droids on Naboo, dog fight with Tie Fighters over the forest moon of Endor, and taking on the the First Order on the desert planet of Jakku.
How do you play Star Wars Battlefront 2?
Regardless of the mode you're playing, Star Wars Battlefront 2 gives you a choice of either a first person or third person perspective. In single player, you'll fight your way through story driven missions that take in all aspects of the Battlefront experience - perhaps beginning in a fire fight on a planet, before jumping into an AT-AT walker to blast your way to freedom, or dodging space debris in your Tie Fighter as you set out on an infiltration mission. Other levels see you playing as various "heroes" from the Star Wars lore, letting you pick up a lightsaber as Luke Skywalker, or pick up the pieces of a deal gone wrong as Han Solo on Takodana.
Online, Star Wars Battlefront 2 offers a variety of modes to get stuck into, with almost all being objective based, rather than a simple question of kills. In the headline Galactic Assault mode, two teams of 20 players will face off in epic battles, as you work together with your team to take control of points on a map, destroy key objectives, and push the enemies back. Starfighter Assault offers much the same, only for 12 players a team, and with everyone flying spaceships, while Strike mode is a smaller scale, on foot 8 on 8 affair. Heroes vs Villains, meanwhile, gives you a chance to test out your lightsaber skills in a 4 on 4 match, playing as some of the biggest names in Star Wars canon, while Blast is a close quarters, 10 vs 10 team deathmatch as you race to 100 points. An offline Arcade mode allows either a single player, or two players in split-screen to take on various themed challenges (mostly "survive these waves of enemies"), but there's no facility for online split-screen play.
How easy is Star Wars Battlefront 2 to pick up and play?
In terms of accessibility, Star Wars Battlefront 2 is aimed at experienced shooter players. While there is a tutorial here, it doesn't really touch on either the very basics of the controls, or the complexities of the multiplayer mode, meaning players will need to learn on their feet.
Battles in game are fast paced and frenetic. With large, complex and detailed maps, and combat usually happening over a medium to long range, actually spotting the enemy is half of the battle here - especially as there's usually no icon or marker to pick out an enemy character (even the crosshair won't change colour). Having quick reactions, and plenty of situational awareness is a must, as there's a lot to keep an eye on here, and little room for mistake - especially when playing online. Offline, the game does have a choice of three difficulty levels, although there doesn't really seem to be a vast difference between normal and easy. Needless to say, it's still very easy to die in the game's story mode, with irregular checkpoints meaning you may have to play through sections several times.
In terms of options for ease of use, Battlefront 2 does feature full subtitles over cutscenes, but only intermittent subtitling in game, with some at least fairly important conversations not being subtitled. While much of the game is fully voiced, objectives are delivered through text only ("Press [Triangle] to use Shock. The Droid's electro prod attack disables enemies within range")
In terms of mature content, Star Wars Battlefront 2 contains no bad language, no sexual content, and only mild violence, with no gore. Much like in the films, players will engage in combat with enemies using laser blasters, lightsabers, and explosive grenades, but there's very little in the way of realistic damage to enemies, with no blood or gore, and certainly nothing in the way of decapitations or dismemberments. Instead, enemies simply recoil slightly when hit, before falling down when defeated and disappearing.
