Killzone Shadow Fall is a sci-fi first person shooter for the Playstation 4, and one of the console's launch titles. Set in the midst of a war between two races - the Vektan and the Helghast, who've been forced to live together on the same planet, Shadow Fall puts you in the space boots of a soldier in the Vektan army, who's sent behind enemy lines.
What follows is a fairly standard first person shooter, that mixes a reliance on cover and stealth with the use of a sci-fi robot friend, known as OWL. At the touch of a button, your OWL can become a shield, a mobile turret, or a computer hacker, helping level the playing field in many of the game's fights.
However, Killzone Shadow Fall has a lot that players may struggle to get to grips with. For starters, text in the interface is incredibly small, with important text relayed in tiny fonts, which many may struggle to read on anything other than large monitors. The game's checkpointing system could also cause problems for some players, as the checkpoints are so far apart, quitting a level sometimes means the next time you come to play, you'll have to start from the very beginning - and when the levels take an hour and a half to get through, that can be frustrating. As a first person shooter, you'll need to be able to handle dual analogue controls, as well, with the left stick moving your character around, while the right stick handles the view. It's a complex game, and one that may leave newer players stumped.
As a sci-fi first person shooter, there's a lot in Killzone Shadow Fall that parents will want to be aware of. While bad language may be rare, what little swearing there is is often strong (f**k being the strongest), while the violence is strong and bloody. While there's no dismemberments, enemies do give off large spurts of blood when shot, while the melee attack, which you're encouraged to use, sees you driving a dagger into your foe's chest as blood gushes out. When enemies die, they rest in a large pool of blood, and there's also a torture scene, where a character jams an electric prod into your chest, to the sound of your character's screams.
