Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX for the Nintendo 3DS is a rhythm-action music game starring a series of adorable, bobble-headed pop stars, with almost fifty songs to choose from. Based on the 'vocaloid' personalities of Japanese vocal synthsiser Hatsune Miku, their slightly robotic voices sing across a wide range of genres, from rock and pop to disco and ballads, with some surprisingly catchy tunes thrown into the mix - although none that have made it on Top of the Pops.
Playing the game is a simple matter of either pressing the relevant buttons or tapping and swiping the Touch Screen in time with the on-screen markers that move across the screen. The better your timing is, the more points you'll score and the better your final grade for that song will be - and while it is possible to fail songs, with three different difficulties to choose from for each of the control schemes, most should be able to find one they're happy with. Increasing difficulties add in more note possibilities, using a wider variety of buttons or adding extra 'zones' to the Touch Screen for an added challenge.
Completing songs earns you cash (known as 'Mirai Points' or MP) which can be exchanged at the game's store for new outfits, snacks and furniture to decorate your apartment. Upon starting the game for the first time you'll be asked to pick a 'partner' to live in the apartment with you, who you can then dress up, feed snacks and play mini-games with to increase your relationship with them. The way the game initially presents this may be a tad confusing though, making it seem like more of an Animal Crossing/Tomadachi Life style life simulator, and hiding the actual music game away in a menu. But once you figure out how to get to the main game, you'll be well away!
Much like it's cutesy, candy-sweet exterior, Project Mirai is as unoffensive as it looks, with nothing in the way of violence, gore, bad language or sex. Nothing to worry about here whatsoever!
