We've never really got on all that well with Killzone here at Everybody Plays. With more than a dash of the space marine feel to it, a colour palette made out of entirely grey and brown, and a story that never really felt like it got going, the Killzone series has never managed to capture the imagination quite like a Halo or a Call of Duty. But with the announcement of the Playstation 4 last night, it seems Sony are willing to give their sci-fi first person shooter hope one more shot at world domination, with the announcement of Killzone: Shadow Fall.
Presented on stage, the co-founder of Guerilla Games, Herman Hulst went over a little bit of Killzone: Shadow Fall's story. Telling the tale of a conflict between two factions - the gas mask wearing, and genetically modified Helghast, and the people of Vekta, as they search the galaxy for space and resources, the two factions are caught in a battle - one for survival, and the other for territory. As Herman Hulst put it, "The conflict draws parallels to Cold War Berlin, with two factions living side by side, divided by a vast wall. This a story about the loss of home, the search for a new home, and the lengths people go to defend it." Pretty deep stuff.
But perhaps more impressive than the focus on the story was the fact that Killzone seems to have discovered a much wider range of colours. No longer labouring under a dirt filter that makes it filthier than a bored housewife's novel, Killzone: Shadow Fall looks genuinely impressive, with pinks, blues, and greens painting the futuristic cityscape, that stretched as far as the eye could see. While the shooting that comes towards the end of the demo doesn't seem quite as awe inspiring, a focus on story, and its new found... brightness, fills us with hope eternal.
With the game expected to release alongside the Playstation 4 (which in itself is expected by the end of the year), we'd expect to see a lot more of Killzone: Shadow Fall over the next few months. In the meantime, why not check out the first few minutes of gameplay for yourself, which were recorded live at the event using the Playstation 4, before being uploaded using its all new sharing features.
