One of the downsides to last night's Playstation 4 announcement event was the amount of tech demos on show. In fact, while a few games were shown (many of which, like Killzone, and Watch Dogs, we've already covered), it almost felt like the majority of the segments were either tech demos, or announcements of upcoming announcements, rather than trailers for games we could sink our teeth into. Deep Down, on the other hand, straddles both game and tech demo at the same time.
Currently under development by Capcom, Deep Down is a fantasy RPG that's being developed in sync with an all new graphics engine for the PS4 - the hardcore code that makes all the visual bells and whistles come to life. While details about the story, characters, or even the world it takes place in have yet to be revealed (and after all, they're all essential for an RPG), what little has been shown of Deep Down so far has been more than enough to whet our appetite. After all, just take a look a the screen below.
While many were sceptical that the "next generation" of consoles would give us Avatar-quality graphics and worlds, Deep Down looks determined to prove the sceptics wrong. If the presentation is to be believed, the screen you see on the page, and the video below, are all running in "real time" - in other words, this is what the game will really look like when you're playing it. And if that's true, we're in for one incredible ride. Showing off a ludicrously detailed fantasy world, with stalagmites hanging from the ceiling of an expansive cave, a skylight, where roots from a tree on the surface burrowed underground, and perhaps most impressive of all, a giant, fire breathing dragon, Deep Down ticks every fantasy box. In fact, perhaps the only question is - with worlds this incredibly detailed, how large a game can it possibly be? Will our games take a hit in terms of their length because of the immense amount of time it takes to craft a world that looks like this? Or will new techniques be created that help games be as expansive as they are visually impressive?
Either way, Deep Down just shot to the top our most wanted list - although hopefully it's more Skyrim than Dark Souls. Either way, this is a game we can't wait to get our hands on.
