Over the weekend, Activision held its first ever Call of Duty XP event, a gathering for fans of the incredibly popular first person shooter series, which saw thousands of the most dedicated players get together to play the games, and find out the first details about Modern Warfare 3's multiplayer mode. Oh, and there was some tournament to win a million dollars - but no really seems to care about that.
The event was also the place where Activision decided to lift the lid on the versions of the game that will be available for purchase. Along with the standard edition of Modern Warfare 3, which is just the game on its own, you'll be able to purchase a Hardened Edition, and even a Limited Edition console, if you're truly crazy. Find out the details below:
Modern Warfare 3 Hardened Edition
Setting you back a cool £79.99, the Hardened Edition of Modern Warfare 3 is their fancy word for the limited edition. Coming in a fancy box, the Hardened Edition will also net you an animated Timeline Theme (if you're on the PS3) or some Juggernaut Armour for your Avatar on the 360, and a field journal, which has over 100 pages of genuine military sketches that chronicle the entire series. Last but not least, you'll also get a year's free subscription to Call of Duty: Elite, Activison's new social-network-come-game-subscription service that nets you a load of extras, including 20 downloadable packs of in-game goodies, from map packs, to new spec ops missions, and beyond. The Elite subscription alone should set you back £35, making this reasonably good value for money.
Limited Edition Console
Also announced at the event, and this time a Microsoft exclusive, is the Limited Edition Modern Warfare 3 Console, which has been made to look "battle worn". Coming with two controllers, both with a fancy rotating D-Pad which pops up to allow great control (and is pretty useless for Call of Duty, seeing as it hardly uses the D-Pad), along with a copy of the game, and a 320 GB hard drive, the console will also make Call of Duty related noises when you turn it on, off, and eject the disk - luckily, it won't be a twelve year old American boy screaming profanities at us, or asking if we're really a girl. It is worth remembering, though, these sounds will actually be played from a speaker within the console, and there's no way to turn them off, or adjust the volume - so switching the Xbox off after a long night playing may be a bit of a no-no - unless you want to wake the rest of the house. If you're interested, it can be pre-ordered for £269.99 from GAME.
Set for launch on the 8th of November, Modern Warfare 3 looks set to set the gaming world alight again this Christmas. Guaranteed to take the top spot on Christmas lists across the country, Modern Warfare 3 concludes the trilogy by bringing the war home, as a Russian lead force invades the western world - with America, Germany, and even good old England being the targets. With early footage showing a firefight outside the Houses of Parliament, and chase in an underground train, Modern Warfare 3's looking to be every bit as good as a Hollywood blockbuster - and possibly even more so. Look out for it this Christmas.
