Toki Tori 2 is a puzzle game for the Wii U in which you guide a rotund yellow chicken through forests, caves and more, making use of his two moves - a stomp and a chirp - to affect the many animals that litter each level, and find your way to the end. The challenge here is in figuring out how best to make use of the animals in each level to make your way to the end, as each creature reacts differently to your moves. Stomping, for example, will push some creatures away, while it makes others blow bubbles. With creatures including box-loving crabs who can be used as portable platforms, frogs that burp out bubbles to float you to higher places and big blue birds that carry you further afield, each of which can interact with each other, it's a puzzle game like no other, and one that requires a rather trial and error approach.
The game adopts a pretty minimalist approach to things, with no tutorial, no signposts showing you where to go and no hints whatsoever - which can either be a blessing or a curse, depending on the person. If your child's the sort that's willing to persevere, experiment and explore on their own, then they'll likely get more out of Toki Tori 2 than someone who doesn't have the confidence to explore at their own whim, and ends up giving up when it's not all that clear what they're supposed to do. It's also worth bearing in mind that many of the creatures can be a bit finicky and awkward to interact with at times, requiring precision timing, which may be frustrating for younger children.
With no text in the entire game besides the title, there's no problems in the reading department, although if your child isn't yet a confident reader, the chances are they'll struggle with this. With a heavy emphasis on logical thinking, trial-and-error, and problem solving, this is a game for older children who enjoy games that use their brain more.
In this bright and colourful puzzle game starring a podgy yellow chicken, there's nothing untoward in the slightest - everything's suitably cheerful and non-violent, and even gives your brain a workout in the process.
