Tenkai Knights: Brave Battle is a robot fighting game that follow the story of four teenage boys. After accidentally stumbling through a portal in an antique shop, the boys find themselves in another dimension, where they learn that they are in fact the legendary Tenkai Knights. Essentially robots that live in another world called Quarton and fight against evil, it's up to the Tenkai Knights to lead the fight against the corrupted - by beating up some bad guy robots across some very small stages.
A kind of beat-'em-up-come-platformer, only on a small scale, the game's divided up into a series of short missions. Each mission gives you two or three objectives to complete, which usually involves defeating 'x' amount of enemies, or protecting something from enemy attacks, with each mission taking only a few minutes to complete, making this a good fit with quick 'pick up and play' sessions.
The controls for the fighting moves are very basic and easy to get used to, with three buttons (A, X and Y) handling your attacks, while the B button handles jumps, although the game doesn't actually have anything in the way of a tutorial, so your child will be expected to figure it out on their own. Some of the enemy robots can also be rather challenging to defeat, and may take a lot of patience on the part of younger players. Having to watch closely, learn how your opponent attacks, and figure out how best to dodge can be complex. Button mashing doesn't work, as there's an emphasis on timing here - and that may be frustrating to younger players.
Between the missions, there are also several (non-voiced) story sequences, which will require a decent reading skill to understand, although there isn't a huge chunk of text to get through, and the text and language used is easy to follow. For those who aren't fans of the series, the story can be tricky to follow, but it's far from essential to the game - for many, the fighting robots will be enough to keep them happy!
As the game revolves around robots fighting other robots, each of which is armed with weapons such as guns and swords, there is some minor, cartoon style violence here - but it's nothing for parents to be too concerned about. There's no blood, guts, gore, swearing, sex, or anything else untoward - just some robots bashing each other with a variety of weapons.
