Power Rangers Megaforce is a side-scrolling beat 'em up for the 3DS that ties in with the Power Rangers TV show of the same name. A basic, by-the-numbers tie-in, after selecting a character, your child will have to guide them through a series of levels beating up endless bad guys by unleashing punches, kicks and the occasional special move, and collecting items like cards in order to use more powerful attacks. At the end of each stage there's a boss to defeat(by hammering the attack button), and a few extras like an AR card scanner, and a "classic clips" section round out the package, but the core game remains the same from level to level.
In terms of things younger children may struggle with, it's arguably the controls that may cause the biggest problem. Fiddly and sometimes unresponsive, older, may patient players can conquer the controls, but younger players may be put off. Also of concern is the number of spelling and grammatical mistakes peppered throughout the game's text, which may make it a challenge for younger players to understand: "We need you help!", "You OK? Hang in th ere" and "The Gosei icon indicates that the Ranger you chose to morph and is more powerful for the day" being a few of our favourites
Things are fairly tame in Power Rangers Megaforce. There's no blood, and the violence is very cartoony in keeping with the tone of the show, with enemies taking no realistic damage, although the alien characters look downright weird. If you're happy for your child to watch the Power Rangers on TV, then there should be no problem with the game, as it's closely based on the series in terms of both characters and settings.
