Moon Diver is a four player, co-operative side scrolling hack and slash game, that lets up to four players team up on the same console to battle their way across twelve levels, defeating thousands of enemies as they go. With each enemy they defeat, players will earn experience points, which they can then spend to improve their character's stats.
Although most enemies can be defeated in one hit, it's difficult to recommend Moon Diver, due to the sheer difficulty of the boss fights. Each level ends with a boss, and these quickly become an exercise in frustration, as most can kill you in one hit, which, if a co-op partner doesn't rescue you in time, will lead to you restarting the level from the very beginning. If your child will be playing in single player only, it's difficult to recommend this, as we found it frustrating as it was.
In terms of questionable content, there's little for parents to really be concerned about in Moon Diver. There doesn't seem to be any blood, as most enemies you face are robots, and hitting them with your weapon simply causes sparks and a bright line to appear. There's no bad language, either, and no sex, so the only thing parents should really be concerned about is whether they're OK with their children destroying a lot of robots, winged demons, and some strange flying creatures that look a bit like pterodactyls.
In local multiplayer, Moon Diver is a much more interesting experience. With a full compliment of four players playing on the same console, the game becomes a lot easier, as there are more people to take out the same amount of enemies - and someone there to revive you, should you be taken out yourself. As it's harder for a boss to hit you all at once, and more likely that one of you will survive, suddenly the game becomes a lot more fun - although it still has its moments of frustration. If you're looking to buy Moon Diver, you'll be wanting to play it in four player co-op - two players simply aren't enough.
