What is MegaDimension Neptunia VII
MegaDimension Neptunia VII is a Japanese role playing game for the PS4, set in a land of anthropomorphic games consoles, where each of the major consoles are actually young women. Full of gaming references, puns, and nudges, the game follows the story of a group of girls, known as Console Patron Units, fighting to save the lands they rule over. You play as a girl named Neptune to begin with (a character based on a never-released SEGA console) - but as you progress, new friends are made, and old ones introduced, adding to the playable characters.
Split into three separate stories, each interconnecting, the game opens when an ordinary SEGA Dreamcast console turns out to be a portal to another dimension, and sucks the two heroins inside. With an evil at work, causing trouble in the land of Gamindustri, it's up to you to explore the many dungeons, fight monsters, and make the girls stronger so that they're ready to face this evil.
How do you play MegaDimension Neptunia VII
As a role playing game, your time in MegaDimension Neptunia will be split fairly evenly between exploring the game's dungeons and hubs, taking part in battles against the enemies you encounter, and watching lengthy "visual novel" style cutscenes, as the story unfolds. Battles here are turn based, giving you plenty of time to think through your moves, although they are a bit different to your normal battles. When it's your turn, you can move around freely (the game isn't grid based), and positioning your characters in the right spots will let you perform special team attacks. Defeating enemies earns you experience (which makes you stronger) and items, which you can use to craft items to keep you healthy, and replenish your SP, which you use to perform special attacks.
How easy is MegaDimension Neptunia to pick up and play?
In terms of accessibility, MegaDimension Neptunia isn't too tricky, and the battles are undoubtedly the most complex part. Even here, though, they're a long way off the complex strategy battles found in some games, and the fact it's turn based means you have all the time in the world to think about what you want to do next, and shuffle your characters around appropriately. You can also save the game at regular points, so if at any time you want a break you can do so.
While it may be light on violence, MegaDimension Neptunia VII has regular sexual references and imagery, meaning this isn't one for the easily embarrassed. Some of the characters wear revealing clothing, exposing their breasts but not their nipples, with some lingering camera shots from an upskirt angle. There are a couple of scenes where female characters are shown having a bath together, with the only thing protecting their modesty being the water that's being splashed about.
There is suggestive content in the text as well, such as "(Mushrooms) are delicious if you roast them on a skewer, and the sight of you avariciously devouring them would be quite… delightful." That line is delivered to one of the girls by a talking fish with a human face who winks at her when he says it.
When fighting monsters in the game, there is no bloodshed, with characters simply disappearing once been defeated. Characters you play as will make distressed noises when hit, such as cries of pain.
There is frequent bad language throughout the game, the words 'crap' and 'b*stard' in particular. The word 'sh*t' is used as well, for example "Don't give me that sh*t" and "Wow… It's gloomy as sh*t in here,".
