Final Fantasy is a role playing game that was originally released on the NES way back in 1987, and as such, plays a little bit differently to the more modern titles. With very little in the way of a story, you get to create your party, and venture forth around a fantasy world - but things are a heck of a lot harder than you'd expect.
Games in general tended to be harder way back when, and Final Fantasy is a testament to this. While the game's random battles are turn-based, you start off with a party so weak, and come up against enemies that are so tough, you'll find yourself being demolished in next to no time. For younger players, and those without masochistic tendencies, this may prove too much of a barrier in itself, especially as there's nothing in the way of a tutorial to help you get started.
As there's less of an emphasis on story, there is less reading involved here than in other Final Fantasy games, although there's still enough that your child will need to be a fairly strong reader in order to figure out what's going on. That said, with a learning curve that will push even role playing veterans, this is one best left to the older children/teens only.
As a rather old game with somewhat limited graphics, there's nothing parents really need to be aware of on the content side of things for Final Fantasy - there's no blood, violence, or swearing.
