Set in world war two, Dogfight 1942 is a flight sim with a difference. Designed to be as easy to pick up and play as possible, and with the ability to play through the campaign in full split-screen co-op, Dogfight puts the fun into flight sims.
Initially a little bit awkward to control, thanks to the over-sensitivity of the sticks, pressing the Back button (on the 360) will zoom the camera in a little bit closer, which seemingly also tones down the twitchyness. With the difficulty turned down to easy, the game switches on a variety of aids to make the game as easy to play as possible, including automatically controlling your throttle, to help you stay behind enemies, and snatching the controls away when you're about to crash into the ground, saving your life in the process.
With plenty of missions to play through, and a decent choice of planes on offer, this is a great game for any budding flight enthusiast. A basic reading ability is required, however, as the mission briefings, and mission objectives tend to be relayed in text form. They're also rather small, meaning a pretty large TV, or rather good eyesight, is a requirement.
Luckily, Dogfight 1942 is fairly light on anything too questionable. There's no visible violence or gore towards humans, but you do spend most of your time shooting down other planes, blowing up tanks and boats, or otherwise causing large explosions. There's also a few swear words mentioned, with "sh*t" and "b*tch" featuring fairly early on, but they're very few and far between.
With a full two-player co-op split-screen campaign, Dogfight 1942 is perfect for family play. Accessible, and most importantly, a heck of a lot of fun, playing in split-screen simultaneously makes the game easier, and a lot more fun. With the ability to heal each other's planes by shooting at each other, it makes a lot of sense to take a little wingman into battle with you. Tally-ho!
