Diablo 3 is a role-playing game with a heavy focus on multiplayer fun. With support for four player co-op, in any mix of same console or online, two friends on the sofa on one console can play with another two players who can't make it round - or, you can all cram onto the same settee for hours of multiplayer goodness.
While extra players certainly aren't required, they can make your life in Diablo 3 a heck of a lot easier. A hack and slash role playing game, your life in Diablo 3 mostly revolves around making the best use of your powers to beat monsters up, before collecting the loot they leave behind. Without all that much of a story tying things together, it's the exploration, the progression, and the discovery of rare items that'll keep you coming back for more.
In terms of obstacles for newer players, though, there are only a few potential stumbling blocks. The first is that the game can be quite complicated at times - equipping your character with the right weapons, armour, and items is often key to your progress, and figuring out how one item will improve your standings, or make things harder can take a lot of balancing and contemplation. The other is that the game does have the odd difficulty spike around boss fights, where the game suddenly becomes much harder - although these can be overcome through sheer perseverance, and levelling your character. Although most of the quests are fully voiced, there's a lot of reading to be done when it comes to understanding what your equipment can do, and following character's instructions in the game, so a reading ability is a must.
With often graphic and over the top gore, Diablo 3 has a lot that parents should be aware of. Every strike of a weapon will send blood spurting out from your enemies, while certain bosses will explode in a shower of gore, bones and internal organs. In its defence, it isn't the most detailed depiction of dismemberment we've ever seen - but it's likely something families buying for younger children will want to bear in mind.
