With 40 licensed cars on offer, and a distinctly "urban" feel to the racing, Asphalt 3D may appear, on the surface, to be the sort of thing that would go down well with children. Sadly, the unagreeable control scheme, which often sees your car gaining a mind of its own, and driving the way *it* wants to, is more than a little bit frustrating for adults, and is likely to frustrate and confuse children even more.
There's a surprising amount of reading involved here for a children's game, which makes it unsuitable for children who have yet to properly develop their English. Reading what you have to do in each race, what your sub-objectives are, and even a large part of the upgrade and race selection system are all text based, so a child without the ability to read will lose a lot.
While the most persistent children may get some fun out of this, they'll have to work for it - if you're looking for an arcade racer on the 3DS, we'd recommend you go for Ridge Racer instead.
As a racing game, there's nothing at all in Asphalt 3D for parents to worry about - no sex, no bad language, and no violence.
Sadly, while Asphalt 3D has a multiplayer mode, it won't allow for single card download play, instead requiring that everyone has their own copy of the game, making it practically useless for anyone who doesn't have more money than sense.
