Darn you Nintendo, and your wool-derful looking platformers. Kirby's Epic Yarn on the Wii was sew, sew good, and now it's spiritual successor, Yoshi's Woolly World is tugging at our heart strings once more. It may have been a long time coming - and for a while we were knit so sure it would ever make it - but its material-filled, hand-knitted world looks seriously awesome. And, if we needle little help, we can even rope in a friend, thanks to it's two player co-op. With less than a month till cast off though, Nintendo have a few more stitches of information for us - this time concerning their line of Skylanders-like figures, the amiibos.
If there's one thing we have a weakness to though, it's alternative costumes in games. Whether it's sending Lara Croft clambering up snowy mountains in a torn evening dress sans shoes in Tomb Raider Legend, battling the darkness in people's hearts in Tales of Hearts R while wearing a giant chef's hat or dancing through each Project Diva song with a monocle and moustache on - we like being able to dress our characters up in a gamut of stupid costumes. So imagine our delight when we heard that our most anticipated game of the Wii U's life, Yoshi's Woolly World, would have collectable 'patterns' - a whole load of different Yoshi designs to dress our adorable little dino up in. From cow-print to watermelon-inspired to bright purple stripes, it plays right into our two biggest OCDs - collecting stuff and dressing up.
But Nintendo have another trick up their sleeve - one that makes Yoshi's wardrobe even bigger. By tapping one of more than forty compatible amiibos to the Wii U GamePad, you can dress the little dinosaur in a whole new range of outfits, each inspired by the character figure in question. From Link to Luigi, from Donkey Kong to King DeDeDe and from Rosalina to Pac-Man, there's oodles of costumes to unlock for the amiibo collectors among you - although we're betting none are quite as disturbing as this Mario Yoshi:
What happens if you use a Yoshi amiibo, we hear you cry? Does Yoshi turn into... Yoshi? Does nothing happen whatsoever? Maybe you get an extra life? Or does the world simply end, in a similar way to if you google Google, or try to divide by zero? Turns out you get a second, computer-controlled Yoshi following you through the level, providing some much needed ammunition for high up switches and enemies and a perfect stepping stone up to higher areas. Kind of seems like a bit of a let-down if we're honest, especially when they've made those super cute Yarn Yoshi amiibos and everything.
Yoshi's Woolly World hits the Wii U in just under a month's time, on the 26th June - we can't wait! In the meantime, why knit check out the latest trailer, featuring creepy Mari-yoshi:
