For the penultimate Summer of Arcade (or Summer of Overpriced) game, Microsoft's latest offering is one for the first/third person shooter crowd. As with all the other games in the promotion, this week's Monday Night Combat is 1200 Microsoft Points - or around £10 - which we, being the massive cheapskates we are, think is rather steep for any aracde game (unless it's really really good). The previous Summer of Arcade games included creepy black and white puzzle game, Limbo, wet and wild speed boat (or rubber duck) racing in Hydro Thunder Hurricane, and old-school action/platformer, Castlevania: Harmony of Despair.
Monday Night Combat
Price: 1200 Microsoft Points (about £10.00)
Monday Night Combat is described as a 'third-person class-based shooter' - meaning you can pick one of six types of character (such as 'Assault'), each of which has a specific set of weapons and characteristics (for the 'Assault', these include an assault rifle, grenade launcher and a jet pack).
In Monday Night Combat, you play in part of what is described as 'the most lethal sport of the future', in which you compete for cash and prizes to upgrade your character (or 'Pro' as the game calls it). With two modes on offer, the main object of the game is to earn as much money as you can - which you do by basically blasting the other team, or their robot army, to smithereens (or, in Blitz mode, their 'Moneyball', which drops money every time its shot). As well as playing through the career mode, there are both offline and online co-op modes, letting you come together with your friends to take on the world - or, at least, four other players across Xbox Live.
And although there does seem to be a little bit more to it than that just destroying robots with your friends, the main question that remains is - is it worth the 1200 points? You'll have to wait for our review to find out.
