3DS owners have been hit with a one-two shot of cancellations for the console that have already served to raise question marks about the commitment levels of some of the larger names in games development to Nintendo's new handheld.
Earlier in the week Capcom announced that they would be pulling the plug on Mega Man Legends 3, with the company commenting on its website "Unfortunately it was not felt that the Mega Man Legends 3 Project met the required criteria, and it is with regret that we must announce that the Mega Man Legends 3 Project has been cancelled, meaning that Capcom will not be releasing the Prototype or the full game."
Mega Man originally made its name on the NES, becoming one of the most popular series of all time thanks to a run of top quality releases on the console. It has since made appearances in just about every generation of console releases and is one of the oldest and most revered gaming franchises around. News of the cancellation will be a knock to older gamers in particular, who would have been looking forward to seeing Mega Man in 3D.
The news was followed a couple of days later with another high profile cancellation. The victim this time was Assassin's Creed: Lost Legacy, another big-hitting series that has gained a large measure of popularity over the last few years.
The cancellation had long been rumoured and was finally confirmed by Ubisoft CFO Alain Martinez who commented "[The cancellation] was a decision made back in September 2010. It wasn't due to anything that took place. We felt the machine already had a number of hardcore games for its release."
While both games were in the very early stages of development when announced, their cancellations will be a knock to the 3DS' hardcore credentials
