Ah, the 90s. They were easier times, weren't they? A time of mullets, Amigas, and games the likes of which you'd never see nowadays. After all, imagine walking into a meeting and pitching a game with a name like "Superfrog" nowadays? If it didn't have a gun wielding bald space marine, you'd probably get laughed out of the room. But luckily for Team 17, they have history on their side, as today they announced a HD remake of their classic Amiga platformer.
Due for release exclusively on the Playstation 3 and PS Vita, Superfrog HD is a platformer that harks back to one of gaming's first "golden eras". Originally released in 1993 on the gaming machine of choice, the Amiga, Superfrog earned rave reviews from publications from Amiga Format to Amiga Action, becoming something of a cult hit. Telling the tale of a prince who's cursed by a witch, and turned into a frog, the game begins when our unlucky amphibian hero happens across a bottle of Lucozade, which grants him magical powers, turning him from an average frog into the titular Superfrog. Split into six worlds, each of which featured four levels, it was up to you to leg it through each of the lands, dodging the various enemies, and collecting enough coins to unlock the gate before heading off to the next level, and your eventual showdown with the wicked witch.
With a lick of paint bringing the game kicking and screaming from the pixelation of yesteryear into crisp HD, Superfrog will be making its way to the PS3 and PS Vita later this year. Whether versions on other formats will eventually appear remains to be seen, but in the mean time, why not take a gander at the video below, and get ready for the return of the frog.
