In a move that we had a hunch might happen, Nintendo have cunningly announced the Wii U version of all star Nintendo beat 'em up Super Smash Bros will in fact be launching this year. Announced some three days after the release of Super Smash Bros on the 3DS - or as it's known in the industry "just enough time to give everyone chance to buy it before we tell them the version they really want is out in a few months time" - our jaded journalist minds are at least happy that they'll be able to enjoy some four player Nintendo themed brawls this side of Christmas.
The hugely anticipated title will be fighting its way into stores in Europe on Friday 5th December. With only eight weeks to go (we counted), Nintendo have also lifted the lid on a variety of new bundles, add-ons, and amiibo figures, which can be scanned into the game - like Skylanders, just possibly not as useful. As with all the best things in life, Smash Bros will come in two flavours, with an add on sold separately if you want to use the other one properly:
Super Smash Bros. For Wii U + Mario amiibo
This bundle includes Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and a Mario amiibo. The new amiibo figures are a big new feature for Super Smash Bros, and what better way to start your collection with Super Mario himself!
Super Smash Bros. For Wii U + GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U
If you like to play your Super Smash Bros the old school way, this bundle includes both the game and GameCube Controller Adapter. The adapter can be plugged into the Wii U and allows you to plug in up to four of your old GameCube controllers and play the classic way - although oddly enough, it doesn't come with a GameCube controller. Still, WaveBird owners need not worry either, as the wireless controllers are also compatible with the adapter. Ideal for fans of the older Smash Bros. games
Super Smash Bros. GameCube Controller
A special edition Super Smash Bros branded GameCube controller will also go on sale from December 5th. This super cool looking controller is black with the Smash Bros logo printed on the top:
Also revealed today is the roster of figures that make up the first wave of amiibos for Super Smash Bros. Mario, Peach, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Link, Fox, Samus, Wii Fit Trainer, Villager, Pikachu, Kirby and Marth will be released on November 28th, a week before Super Smash Bros Wii U is released, followed closely by the second wave of Zelda, Diddy Kong, Luigi, Little Mac, Pit and Captain Falcon on December 19th.
As a bit of background to the Amiibo figures, these little toys will make use of the NFC (near field communication) technology built into the Wii U gamepad to communicate with the game. By scanning them into your controller, you'll be able to enhance your gameplay in Super Smash Bros, with the figures also set to be compatible with Mario Kart 8, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Mario Party 10 and Yoshi's Woolly World. There will also be a peripheral for Super Smash Bros. 3DS to allow amiibo communication, although when that'll release is anyone's guess.
Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS is out now and has already sold 2.8 million units worldwide. We're still excited for the Wii U one - although we have no idea which bundle we'll get.
