Whilst the Sonic games may have suffered a few blips on other platforms (we're looking at you, Sonic the Hedgehog), the Sonic games on the Wii and DS have always been top-quality, blisteringly fast, reaction testing platformers that appeal to both children and adults alike. And while it's been a while since we've seen Sonic on the DS and Wii, news today arrived that Sonic will be making his way to both platforms in a brand new platforming adventure, entitled Sonic Colours.

These are the Wisps - a weird alien race that'll give you special powers when you free them.

The plot sounds about as logical as you could expect from a game staring a blue hedgehog, that walks on two legs, and wears trainers. Upon spotting a mysterious amusement park orbiting the planet, and hearing rumours that Dr Eggman is holding an entire alien race hostage there, Sonic, being the all-round good egg that he is, decides to head up to the orbiting theme park, to free the alien race. Soon after arriving, however, Sonic discovers that these creatures, known as Wisps, can give him special powers - with each colour representing a different one. Freeing a Yellow alien, for example, allows him to drill through the ground, while rescuing a cyan alien allows Sonic to speed through the level as a laser.

Rather than just being a straight copy, each version will be different to the other, with the Wii focusing on blending both 2D and 3D platforming gameplay, whilst the DS version "takes full advantage of the console's dual screens". We presume that means it'll have levels that span from the top screen to the bottom, making for some pretty confusing moments when your hedgehog decides to switch screens.

With each version all promising uniquely coloured Wisps, you've got all the more reason to pick both versions up when the game eventually launches this Winter.
