With free-to-play online role playing games being a pretty big deal on consoles at the moment, as heavy hitters like Neverwinter and The Elder Scrolls Online compete with games like Skyforge for the attention of the same group of players, regular, headline grabbing updates are becoming more and more commonplace, as each game tries to make itself stand out.
Hoping to attract a portion of the player base over to their take on the online role playing game, the team behind Skyforge have announced the Overgrowth update - a free expansion that brings with it a load of new quests, a new class, and a bunch of other additions when it hits PC on 11th April, and consoles on the 12th.
As the name may suggest, the Overgrowth update is all about a race of green fingered plant-based monsters that are every gardener's worst nightmare. With nature itself having become corrupted, a breed of creatures known as the Phytonides have gone on the warpath, hunting down the Goddess of Flowers, Tessa. Having legged it to the game's land of Aelion in an attempt to get to safety, it doesn't take long before the Phytonide army follow her through, leaving the poor folk of the land (including you) reaching for a tin of Weedol.
Luckily, though, Tessa hasn't come alone. Bringing with her her "children" - the Grovewalkers - the update will add a whole new class to the game, and one which seems perfect for those who like a bit of flexibility in their characters. A skilled race of magic users, the Grovewalkers' secret trick is their living armour, which lets them turn themselves into a tank on the frontline when the going gets tough. A mage that can take a beating in battle? Don't mind if we do. It's also worth bearing in mind that, thanks to Skyforge's unique class system, you can switch class at any point mid-game, without having to create a whole new character.
Though the update itself will be free of charge, letting you play through all the quests, and eventually access the Grovewalker class itself, you can also choose to pre-order the collector's edition through the digital store. Setting you back a not insubstantial $34.99 (or 34.99 Euros), the collector's edition will bag you:
- Instant access to the Grovewalker class as soon as the update goes live
- A unique Grovewalker costume
- A legendary Grovewalker weapon
-
14 Days of Premium Subscription
-
10,000 Argents
-
300,000 Credits
-
7,500 Knowledge of Enemies
-
35,000 points of Premium Rank Progress
And, if you pre-order before the update goes live, you'll also get:
- An exclusive companion
- Special Grovewalker headgear (available from the update's launch)
Set to launch on the 11th April on PC, and a day later for PS4 and Xbox One players, the Skyforge Overgrowth update will be totally free - so fans of MMORPGs will want to be sure they have enough space on their hard drive to get this as soon as it hits.
