While the London 2012 Olympics already has an official tie-in game, in the form of Mario and Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, the latest instalment in the incredibly popular (and lots of fun) mini-game series, the powers that be at SEGA have decided that one official tie-in isn't enough, as the games are set to be getting a more serious tie-in too, ready for when they kick off in the summer of next year. And why not? God knows we've paid enough for them.
Going by the long, if to-the-point title of London 2012 - The Official Video Game of the Olympic Games, the game of the, er, games, looks set to offer a range of simple mini-games based around all the popular events, only rather than playing as a bright pink hedgehog, you'll be playing as a virtual representation of a man that looks just enough like Tom Daly that you can tell who it is without the developers having to pay the licensing costs.
With over 30 games on offer (strangely, five less than the last Olympics game, way back in 2008), there'll be plenty of variety to get your teeth into, across a range of multiplayer modes, including both local and online multiplayer, as you compete with your friends, or total strangers for the gold. And while we can't help but wish that Mario, Sonic and the crew came would be coming to the 360/PS3 as well, we can certainly understand why the "HD" consoles have had to have their own version of the games - with Mario taking a starring role, Nintendo would never have let it appear on a non-Nintendo platform.
London 2012 - The Official Video Game of the Olympic Games will release next year, presumably in time for the Olympics themselves, at around the same time as Mario and Sonic release their version.
