We've been waiting patiently for new entries in the Professor Layton and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney series for some time now, and it's recently been revealed that the two latest titles from each series, Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies, will both be heading to these shores later this year with the good Professor's final outing hitting 3DS on November 8th and Phoenix's latest case ready to be cracked sometime in the Autumn. Good news indeed for folks who like to indulge in a bit of lateral thinking while out and about with their handhelds. However, despite Dual Destinies eventually securing a European release after seeming unlikely for some time (exclusively as an eShop download though) one title seemed destined to remain in Japan; the franchise crossover Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. Perhaps it was considered too strange of a mix up for the West, or possibly the appeal of both series over here was underestimated. However, thankfully last week's Nintendo Direct saw Nintendo's European president Satoru Shibata slick back his hair and strike Phoenix's iconic 'Objection!' pose to announce that the puzzle / adventure hybrid will in fact be released in Europe in 'early 2014'.
So why is this a big deal? Well, as many will already know, these two series have long been held in very high regard and are pretty much untouchable in the handheld puzzle and adventure categories. Level 5's Professor Layton games are a skilful blend of lateral thinking and captivating story, while the Ace Attorney series from Capcom is revered for its unique gameplay mix of investigation and courtroom questioning and a cast of memorable characters. Having elements of both together in one game seems like a dream come true for fans of either series, and the new title looks to combine the very best of both worlds.
Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, released in Japan late last year, sees both characters (and their respective assistants, Luke Triton and Maya Fey) find themselves in London where a magical book transports them to the mysterious Labyrinth City. There they'll have to team up in order to solve numerous problems, and presumably find some way back home. Of course, bearing in mind the 'vs.' of the title, it's quite possible that the two legendary investigators won't always agree on the best solution. While Phoenix puts his legal skills to good use defending a seemingly innocent girl, Layton heads off to try and figure out just what's going on by tackling a series of head-scratching conundrums. The game features separate trial and puzzle sections, so it seems as though the two elements are handled separately by each character. Expect to be exploring and solving riddles with Layton and then presenting your findings in court as the Ace Attorney himself.
While the release date is not yet pinned down, it's a relief that we won't miss out on what's sure to be a captivating adventure and yet another must-have title for the 3DS.
