Following on from the recent announcement of Nintendo's latest home console, the Wii U, which will be coming to a living room near you in 2012, and sports a controller which houses a 6.2 inch touch screen, Nintendo have registered a heck of a lot of domain names in an attempt to protect themselves from cyber squatters, should they decide to use any of the product names in future.

There are a few obvious ones in there, including a few games for the Wii that we already know about, such as the recently announced (and awesome looking) Kirby Wii, and Rhythm Paradise, but in amongst the domains are a few potentially interesting phrases. While we've got websites registered for practically every type of controller you could ever think of, from balance boards to zappers, we also have a few potential new games. Wii U Party could well be a sequel to last year's Wii Party, while the same stands for Wii U Fit, Wii U Music, and Wii U Play - could this also come bundled with one of the Wii U's new controllers? Possibly the most interesting, though, are Wii U Ware, which seems to confirm Nintendo are going to be offering downloadable games for the system, much like the current Wii Ware, and "Wii Universe", which, if we try to read possibly a bit too much into it, sounds as though it could well be a name for an online service. Wii Uni, however, is just too good a pun to ignore, and we may well find ourselves borrowing it for a series of tutorial articles about the Wii U closer to the system's launch.
But while it's always fun to speculate, the fact of the matter remains that the most likely option here is that Nintendo are simply protecting themselves, just in case. As the only domains that don't seem to be Wii games with a U stuck on the end, however, Wii Uni, Wii Universe, and New Super Mario Bros. Mii, may possibly be a sign of things yet to come.
