Sometimes, games are like buses - you wait all year for one to come out, and then three come along at once. It's no secret that we're big fans of the figure-collecting Skylanders adventures here at Everybody Plays, and we're pretty stoked for the upcoming Skylanders Superchargers (and Disney Infinity 3.0, too) - but it's the new kid on the block this autumn that's piqued our interest. Coming this September, LEGO Dimensions fuses two of our favourite things into one cutesy plasticy package, mixing the collectable nature of Skylanders with the amazing co-op fun of a Lego game. We think we're in love.
With mere months to go until it hits stores, Warner Bros. have finally revealed some much-anticipated story details in a brand-spanking new trailer. Previously, we've only really heard about the myriad of worlds you'll get to visit in the various wallet-worrying expansion packs, and, outside of the main characters of The Lego Movie's Wlydstyle, Gandalf from Lord of the Rings and LEGO Batman's… well, Batman, they've kept pretty schtum about what the main game's levels will involve - until now.
From the sounds of it, the main story will include levels based off all the properties they've revealed as being the basis for various level and character expansion packs so far - so your little Starter Pack trio of Wyldstyle, Gandalf and Batman will travel to worlds based on a whopping fourteen different popular franchises:
- DC Comics
- The Lord of the Rings
- The Lego Movie
- The Wizard of Oz
- Lego Ninjago
- Back to the Future
- Scooby Doo
- Lego Chima
- Doctor Who
- Jurassic World
- Ghostbusters
- The Simpsons
- Portal
- Midway Arcade
But how can they possibly tie all those together into a coherent story? Well, as usual, it involves the actions of a super villain, the evil mastermind Lord Vortech, who, in a totally unexpected and uncharacteristic move, has got his heart set on ruling the LEGO 'Multiverse' - i.e. all the parallel Lego-ised universes listed above. But in order to do so, he needs to locate the legendary 'Foundational Elements' each of the LEGO worlds is built on - and being a lazy overlord, he simply sucks in characters from all over the universe via a portal to help him. As his power grows, the LEGO worlds get mixed up, characters from different universes meet, and (often hilarious) chaos ensues - and it's up to the team of Wyldstyle, Gandalf and Batman to travel through space and time to rescue their friends before all of LEGO humanity as they know it is destroyed.
Lego Dimensions warps it's way onto the Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and Wii U on the 29th September - and we can't wait! Why not check out the new story trailer for yourselves below:
