In a change from recent Guitar Hero tracklist announcements, Activision have actually announced a few more actual songs that are going to feature in Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, instead of just announcing a huge list of popular artists that the game will feature, and then later revealing they've picked the worst possible song by each artist for the setlist. 22 new songs were announced today (including two songs specially re-recorded by Alice Cooper), each one "picked specifically for their killer riffs and intense solos".
Here's the full list of new songs, judge for yourself:
- Alice Cooper - "No More Mr. Nice Guy"
- Alter Bridge - "Ties That Bind"
- Atreyu - "Ravenous"
- Bad Brains - "Re-Ignition (Live)"
- Blue Öyster Cult - "Burning For You"
- Bush - "Machinehead"
- Deep Purple - "Burn"
- Edgar Winter - "Free Ride"
- Five Finger Death Punch - "Hard To See"
- George Thorogood and The Destroyers - "Move It On Over (Live)"
- Lynyrd Skynyrd - "Call Me The Breeze (Live)"
- Pantera - "I'm Broken"
- Poison - "Unskinny Bop"
- The Ramones - "Theme From Spiderman"
- Rise Against - "Savior"
- The Runaways - "Cherry Bomb"
- Steve Vai - "Speeding"
- Strung Out - "Calling"
- Styx - "Renegade"
- Sum 41 - "Motivation"
- Them Crooked Vultures - "Scumbag Blues"
- The White Stripes - "Seven Nation Army"
Now, call me cynical, but the last time I checked Seven Nation Army didn't feature a killer riff, or an intense solo. In actual fact, it's a terrible choice for a rhythm action game (that isn't Band Hero or Lego Rock Band), due to how the the band, as well as being composed of just two people (a drummer and a guitarist/vocalist), pride themself on being minimalistic. And as previous White Stripes songs have proved on rhythm actions game before, it's going to be incredibly boring to play. The full song is almost literally a 5 note riff repeated for 3 minutes. Let's just hope they don't also feature a song by the Raconteurs (the White Stripes vocalist's other project) like in GH5.
But amongst the terrible songs, the new rubbish staples of rhythm action games (I'm looking at you, Them Crooked Vultures), and the choices that really should've been a different song (Alter Bridge), there are actually a few decent songs in the list, which should hopefully more than make up for the filler. Savior by Rise Against is one of their better tunes, it's impossible not to find "No More Mr. Nice Guy" catchy, and the drums in Hard to See by Five Finger Death Punch sound like they're going to be impossible to play.
And while it's not busy pushing boundaries like Rock Band 3, Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock looks as though it might still turn out to be a fun game - just as long as they put a few more decent songs in, and no more Jack White.
