With concerns over the Brazilians' building work, security scares and potentially violent relocation protests flooding the news, Rio's Olympics preparations are certainly drawing a lot of attention, with some speculating that the sports-obsessed country may struggle with it's bid to host the 2016 sporting festival. But it looks like not everyone is losing faith in the country - SEGA, the folks behind the best-selling Olympics themed Mario & Sonic series have just revealed their latest game, coming to both the Wii U and 3DS next year,
One of the better mini-game collections on the Wii/DS, and now Wii U and 3DS, the Mario & Sonic series brought easy to pick up and play multiplayer action to many, pitting familiar faces from Nintendo and SEGA's games against each other in various sporting contests. With titles taking in both the summer and winter Olympics, and everything from skiing and snowboarding to synchronised swimming and competitive walking turned into an accessible minigame, it's a series that puts a light-hearted spin on the serious sporting competition. Particularly in its over-the-top 'Dream' takes on the sports, which see you pelting your opponents with items in a bobsleigh race, firing snowballs at each other as you race to roll a giant ball to the goal or 'long-jumping' through a course filled with bouncy clouds.
With a new Olympics tournament on the horizon, Rio 2016, it should comes as no surprise then that the folks at SEGA have a new tie-in up their sleeves, Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Coming to both the Wii U and 3DS, as per tradition, the game promises more of the multiplayer mayhem we've come to know from the series, this time set in sunny Brazil. Little details are known, save that 'Soccer' (they mean Football) and Beach Volleyball are among the sports on offer, while each version of the game will have it's own exclusive mini-games to play. For the 3DS comes golf, an event we would have pictured as more suitable for the Wii U and its Wii Remote controllers to be honest, but still. The Wii U meanwhile gets Rugby - a game which we can imagine the likes of Bowser and Donkey Kong will be pros at. From the trailer, it looks like there's a couple of new characters too, with New Super Mario Bros. U's purple bandit Nabbit and Sonic Lost World's pink devil-like villain both making (brief) appearances.
Both the Wii U and 3DS versions of the game are slated for a 2016 release - which is a tad unusual, given that every game in the series so far has hit stores in the October/November of the year prior to the Olympics tournament it references. Why not check out the trailer below:
