With winter just around the corner, and dark nights (ahem) drawing in, it's only appropriate that Warner have released a bit more information about their upcoming (and highly anticipated) co-op adventure, LEGO Batman 3. Letting you play as that other popular Dark Knight, the Batman, the game takes the popular co-op slapstick fun of the LEGO games, and wraps it in a story that sees Batman taking the fight to a host of baddies across the DC Universe - literally. We've played the game and were left suitably impressed - but we'll be the first to admit we're less over the moon about this.
Seemingly keen to jump on the recent hot industry trend of announcing downloadable expansions for games that still have yet to launch, LEGO Batman 3 will be the first LEGO game to offer extra levels by way of the magic of the internet. The recently announced LEGO Batman 3 Season Pass will get you access to six downloadable packs, each including a special story mission, vehicles, bonus achievements and characters, with over 40 playable characters from the DC universe available in total. You can purchase each of the six packs individually at £2.55, or as part of the Season Pass for £12.79 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
Still, if nothing else, at least you'll be getting plenty of play for your pound. The first three playable packs, which will be available alongside the game on day one (eurgh), each pack a unique level to play, either in co-op or single player, along with a load of extra characters and goodies, with some pretty cool scenarios on offer:
- The Dark Knight Pack - Play in the world of the Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight as you experience the iconic chase scene from the film. Play as the Dark Knight himself or other characters like Harvey Dent, Commissioner Gordon, Joker, Bane or Catwoman.
- Man of Steel Pack - Help Jor-El, Lara and robot Kelex save infant Kal-el (Superman) from the evil General Zod. Explore Krypton and battle Zods forces to get the infant to the safety of Earth.
- Batman 75th Anniversary Pack - Celebrate Batsy's 75th Birthday with the Joker and Harley by setting up a variety of celebration set pieces. Then play as various versions of the Batman from DC history, including his first comic book appearance and 60's TV show Batman voiced by TV's Adam West himself.
The last three download packs will be revealed at a later date, and will be included as part of the Season Pass. With that in mind, it's probably best holding off putting your money down for the season pass until we have a bit more information about the last three stages, just in case there's only a few that float your boat.
But "Holy Plastic Bricks Batman!" - there's more! It seems the season pass won't be the only download LEGO Batman 3 will get, as, in a cooler move, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 owners will also be able to grab the "Batman of the Future" character pack.
Containing a series of characters from the classic animated TV show of the same name (but sadly, no levels), the pack will include future Batman Terry McGinnis in his futuristic Batsuit, which can fire futuristic Batarangs, fly around (futuristically) and turn invisible (futur- you get the idea). Joining him in the fray is the now retired Bruce Wayne, trusted Bat-Hound Ace, as well as the villainous Joker, Inque, Blight, Mr. Freeze and Bonk.
While the information we've seen doesn't make reference to a price, the word on the street (or rather, the internet) is that this particular expansion will be available free of charge to anyone who buys the game on PS3 or PS4.
Looks like Lego Batman 3 is shaping up to have bucket loads of content for Batman fans old and new - we're just still not entirely sold on the idea of season passes. Still, guess we'll have to Wing It... and that's a Bat-Pun.
LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham will be released November 14th on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PS Vita, Wii U, 3DS and PC.
