The little pink eating machine returns in a new string-filled adventure. At last night's conference at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, Nintendo announced Kirby's Epic Yarn, the latest instalment of the franchise, exclusively for the Wii.
The new art style puts Kirby into a world of wool, cloth and textiles. Which sounds a bit strange, but, judging from the trailer, is going to be as epic as the game's title suggests.
For those people not familiar with Kirby games, the series of side-scrolling platformers, star Kirby - a little pink puff with a HUGE appetite - who can inhale enemies and eat them. Inhaling certain enemies grants Kirby special powers - ranging from swords to laser beams to UFOs, all with fetching outfits and hats for the little pink protagonist.
Kirby's ability to transform has been taken even further in Kirby's Epic Yarn. When Kirby runs, he now transforms into a car, when in water, he turns into a submarine (although we think it looks more like a fish...), and when floating he now turns into a balloon. He can even morph into a giant, robotic tank, for dealing out punishment of the pink, puffball kind.
The land's not just a pretty face either - it's interactive, allowing you to pull on any stray threads you can see to change the landscape, to reveal hidden areas, or to simply make it easier to progress. Kirby can also go behind the fabric in the level - which then warps and bulges to accommodate him. And, in traditional Kirby style, there are loads of collectable items to find in the levels.
Other good news is that the entire game can be played co-operatively with two players, and should be out for the Nintendo Wii this autumn - personally, we can't wait.
