Ever since the announcement that next week, Sony will be holding an event in New York about the "Future of Playstation", speculation has been rife about what's due to be unveiled, with fans all over the internet even going so far as to trawl through reams of code on webpages as they attempt to find a clue, or even better, a leak about what we should be likely to expect. While it's almost a given that Sony will be lifting the lid on the Playstation 4, in the mean time, certain developers have been joining in the fun, posting teasers, links, or cryptic comments to get people talking.
By far the most telling tease (if that isn't too much of an oxymoron) so far has been from former Little Big Planet developers, Guildford based Media Molecule, who've recently updated their list of projects on their site to include a page titled '?', which contains nothing bar an embedded YouTube video of Toyah Wilcox singing 'It's a Mystery' on Top of the Pops 2. A mystery indeed. While there's no other clues as to what the creative bunch are working on, a recent rumour suggests that development of Little Big Planet 3 has been passed onto Sheffield's Sumo Digital, freeing up Media Molecule to work on something entirely new. Either way, we'd expect something from them next week.
Meanwhile, staying up North, Paul Rustchynsky, the Game Director at Cheshire's Evolution Studios, recently put out a tweet counting down to the "Future of Playstation" event on the 20th of Feb. Best known for off road racer Motorstorm, and before that, the World Rally Championship series, it seems we should also presume we'll be seeing something new from the studio (who, incidentally, are currently hiring). The smart money's on it involving mud and cars - although it could be something entirely new.
Meanwhile, in a slightly more tenuous link, Fumito Ueda, the Creative Supervisor on The Last Guardian, a game which tells the tale of the relationship between a boy and a giant creature and has been in development since 2007, has commented on the game's progress for the first time in months. On his personal website, Ueda said:
"While it's been a long time coming, The Last Guardian remains under my creative supervision and is still in development by an incredibly talented team. I should also mention that details regarding The Last Guardian's release is solely decided by Sony Computer Entertainment, not myself. Please keep an eye out for their official announcement."
So while all's been quiet on the Last Guardian front for the past few months, does Ueda's comment mean we may be seeing an announcement soon? Has the project slipped on to the Playstation 4? Or could we be reading more into it than we should?
Either way, with just seven days to go, there shouldn't be too long left before we find out the answers to all our questions. Excitement level: high.
