Do you hear that? Do you hear the swish of the plaid coat? The click of the smart shoes on the cobbles closely followed by another person? It could only be Sherlock Holmes and Watson! Bigben Interactive and prolific Sherlock Holmes developers Frogwares have revealed that a new Sherlock Holmes game titled 'The Devil's Daughter' is set to hit Xbox One, PS4 and PC in Spring 2016 - so we'll be visiting Baker Street once more!
Those who enjoy a good murder mystery and a game full of witty comebacks, sarcasm and badly timed humour are in for a real treat, as the previous Sherlock Holmes game, Crimes and Punishments set the bar high, plotting a weaving whodunnit yarn, with great cases for you to try and solve. It's fair to say that the next gen consoles are in dire need of some gripping puzzle solving stories to sink our teeth in to - and frankly, there's nothing quite like playing detective and watching the truth be revealed.
What's now being termed as an "investigation adventure", The Devil's Daughter promises to be a gripping tale of intrigue and subterfuge, as you explore crime scenes, collect evidence as clues, and interrogate witnesses and suspects in an attempt to get to the bottom of the crime. With five brand new cases to solve, including cases of revenge, scorned families, and even the occult, it seems like Sherlock and Watson have a lot on their plate.
What the developers have yet to touch on, though, is how you're going to be able to draw your conclusions once you've gathered all your evidence. One of the nicer features of Crimes and Punishments was that we were able to go in to Sherlock's brain in order to piece together the clues we'd found, in order to come up with a conclusion (for more on how this works, see our full Crimes and Punishments review). In a nice touch, it was actually possible to get your conclusions wrong, and incarcerate the wrong guy, with your choices having consequences that came back to haunt you in later cases. As another new feature, Sherlock will now also have to face off against foes in reflex based action sequences (otherwise known as "quick time events", where you have to mash a button as it appears on screen), which we can only assume will have a major consequence (or even a deadly one) on how the story progresses.
Another interesting aspect to the new game is that it seems like there will be free-roaming world to explore, that doesn't just take into account the city streets, but also the rooftops, and other buildings, which is a pretty major departure from previous game. BigBen Interactive promise the upcoming game will allow you to "freely roam an expansive landscape of playable terrain." - and as you can see from the screenshot below (complete with what seems to be an under-construction Tower Bridge), expansive is the word...
With not too long to wait before we can get our hands on the game, Sherlock Holmes: The Devil's Daughter is set for a release in Spring 2016 on PS4, Xbox One and PC. With something of a weakness for story driven games, we can't wait to see what this new game has in store for us, and how our choices will influence the story. Will you come to the right conclusion, or collar the wrong guy? Only one way to find out...
