While guitar games may not be quite as frequent as they used to be, with Guitar Hero having fallen by the wayside, and Rock Band coming to a somewhat unceremonious conclusion earlier this year (although they are at least thinking about a new one), fans of rock music-based rhythm action games haven't really had anywhere to turn to get their fix. But for those of you who have a real electric guitar buried amongst all those plastic ones and fancy taking things to the next level, Ubisoft's Rocksmith 2014 looks set to let you rock out with the pros, thanks to its innovative adaptive difficulty, that'll take you from playing an incredibly simplified version of the track to the real deal on your real guitar. With tracks taking in several generations of rock music, and several huge names on the line-up, there's certainly plenty of tracks we're looking forward to having a go at ourselves. That said, of the 55 songs on offer, a fair chunk have appeared on Guitar Hero and Rock Band games in the past - Nirvana's 'Heart Shaped Box' from Guitar Hero II, original Rock Band's 'Say It Ain't So' by Weezer and the Foo Fighter's 'Everlong' that appeared on Rock Band II, to name but a few. Of course, this time round, you'll be learning to play the actual song, rather than simply mashing buttons on a plastic guitar, but it'd be nice to see a few, less standard tunes make the grade.
Despite what the name suggests, Rocksmith 2014 will be hitting the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 in just over a week's time, on the 25th October. With songs from the original game set to transfer across to the sequel, making an already impressive song list even more diverse, any wannabe rockers should start packing their plectrums now - and check back in a few weeks' time for our full review.
