Ah, nostalgia. Just when you least expect it, it sneaks up behind you and smacks you round the face like Pat Sharp's mullet. Needless to say, we weren't expecting this to come out of the PAX East convention. DuckTales, one of the greatest TV shows of yesteryear (next to the Poddington Peas and the Family Ness) is going to be making a comeback on a games console near you.
Lifting the lid on DuckTales Remastered, an HD "remake" of the 80s NES classic platformer of the same name, Capcom have opened the doors to the memories of our childhood. Joining the recent trend for taking an old game and giving it a new lick of paint (although this one's a much more substantial remake than the others), DuckTales puts you into the top hat of the billed billionaire Scrooge McDuck, as you travel the world with the intention of scooping up as much treasure as you can carry. Armed with your trusty cane, which can be used as everything from a weapon to a pogo stick, you'll visit the five corners of the world as you fend off enemies, fling yourself off ladders and ropes, and work your way past traps, as you help rid the world of its fortunes, one gem at a time.
A 2D platformer in the vein of New Super Mario Bros, DuckTales Remastered does away with the 2D, blocky pixel characters of the original, replacing them with gorgeous animated sprites and 3D backgrounds, bringing the world of DuckTales to life. Developed by the amazing WayForward, who have something of a way with 2D cartoon-themed platformers (see: Batman: The Brave and the Bold), practically the only thing that hasn't been completely redesigned is the levels themselves. They've even added full voiceovers for the characters you meet, with the original actors from the TV series reprising their roles for the game - including the now 94 year old Alan Young who voiced Mr. McDuck back in the day. New cutscenes also help to further the story, giving Scrooge a bit more of a reason (bar greed) to be searching round haunted mansions, ancient mines and the moon - you see, it seems his troublesome nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie have managed to get themselves trapped, and, in traditional platformer style, it's up to Scrooge to rescue them.
With other extras including support for leaderboards, and an all new tutorial level to help you get to grips with Scrooge, we're beyond excited for the game when it launches this summer across the Playstation Network, Xbox Live Arcade and Wii U eShop. All that remains to be revealed is an exact release date, and, most importantly, a price. While we can hope for something around £7 (800 Microsoft Points), we'd probably be willing to shell out a tenner for this one, such is our anticipation. In the mean time, why not bask in the glory of what's perhaps one of the best trailers ever made - a sing along with the DuckTales theme! All together now - DuckTales, woo-ooo!
