Needless to say, you didn't need to be a gaming version of Nostradamus to see this coming. With hints dropped from just after the last game's launch, and leaks aplenty over the past few weeks, it was all but guaranteed that the latest in Disney's "toys to life" buy-the-figures, play-as-the-character-in-game series, Disney Infinity 3.0 would be a Star Wars fest - and now, Disney Interactive have finally made it official, with a batch of screenshots, and a stonking trailer:
As was leaked the other day, Disney Infinity 3.0 will feature Star Wars (and Star Wars characters) in a big way. In all, there will be three, story driven "Play Sets" for you to play through, with one set in the times of Episode 1-3, another taking in the events of the classic trilogy (4-6), and a third and final one launching this December, focusing on the brand new film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. And while previous Play Set adventures have been a little... disappointing, it seems Disney Infinity 3.0 will be going all out to put things right, as the trailer above shows vehicle based levels as well as traditional platforming style adventures - so you'll be able to blow up the Death Star, trip over AT-ATs on Hoth, and do whatever it was Anakin did in the first film.
Unfortunately, it's not all good news, as much like in the first games, only one of these story driven, co-op adventures will come included with the game's starter pack - and it's not the one set in the original trilogy. In a really big plus, however, all Star Wars characters will be compatible with all three Star Wars play sets - while the last game wouldn't let you play as Nick Fury in the Avengers Play Set, it's nice to see Disney relaxing the rules at least a little bit for the new game - even if we are a little disappointed Stitch can't blow up the Death Star, and Mulan can't tell Luke he's a little short for a stormtrooper.
Of course, there's more than just Star Wars to Disney Infinity 3.0, as the game will also come with a revamped, free-form, game-making Toy Box mode, which promises to make it even easier for people to delve in and make their own adventures (and we really hope this is true, seeing as it's more than a little bit confusing at the moment), while a whole host of other optional Play Set adventures will also be available, including one based around the recently released Avengers: Age of Ultron film, and another set in the world of the upcoming Pixar film, Inside Out. When combined with the official confirmation of a range of classic Disney figures, from Frozen's Olaf to Mickey and Minnie Mouse themselves, there's certainly plenty of extras to pick up with Disney Infinity 3.0 - although we're not sure we like the feeling we're getting of it being chopped up into pieces rather than sold as a complete package.
Still, seemingly having taken into account fan feedback about Disney Infinity 2.0, and with the Star Wars cast on board, we'll be keeping our fingers crossed it's third time lucky for Disney Infinity. We know we won't be able to resist hopping into an X-Wing and flying down to Endor - so we'll be keeping you posted on this.
