A first look at Disney Infinity 3.0's Twilight of the Republic

The Star Wars prequels are coming to Disney Infinity - but should we be excited?

A first look at Disney Infinity 30s Twilight of the Republic

Star Wars... there were few words that could get a younger version of ourselves more interested. (Well Star Trek could do it too, but now's not the time for that argument...)

Now that there are younger versions of myself in existence, not many words get them as excited for a game as 'Disney Infinity'. My daughter happily spending hours whizzing round her virtual toy box as Elsa in a go-kart (I remember that part of Frozen too).

Now, as we've known for some time, thanks to Disney's acquisition of the Star Wars franchise, these two sources of excitation are due to come crashing together in Disney Infinity 3.0 (feels like a superfluous .0 to me...). As has been the way with the other games, 3.0 is once again divided up into two very different sections - the "make your own fun" Toy Box mode, and the more traditional, story driven, co-op adventures known as Play Sets. One such Play Set will come bundled with the game itself - the rather cooly named "Twilight of the Old Republic". But the news is not all good. For while this may be the freebie that comes with the game, there's probably a reason, as it's set in the universe of the... I can hardly bring myself to say it... of the...

Prequels.

Nooooooo!

The 'Twilight of the Republic' playset will be set in the latter years of the Clone Wars and takes in the worlds of Tatooine, Coruscant, Geonosis and Naboo, with the latter, the Gungan's home world offering both the promise of an 'epic' boss battle, but the unnerving likelihood of Jar Jar Binks cameo. However, while JJB has yet to be mentioned in the information we have on hand, we do have confirmation that you'll be able to lightsaber battle alongside such Jedi greats as Ahsoka Tano, evil war lord in the making Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and everyone's second favourite little green dude Jedi Master Yoda, doing battle against battle droids (they're not bad, they're just programmed that way) and the double edged sabre of KISS reject Darth Maul.

Each of the Jedi heroes will also have specialised ways of using the Force in combat, along with their own special finishing moves (parents, we're not talking Mortal Kombat style here, this is Disney remember), making this the perfect opportunity to take control of Yoda's crazy acrobatic skills, or dual wield as young Tano as she reduces some 'droids to spare parts.

Vyooommm. Vrrmmm. Vuuumm.

Set to launch at the end of August alongside the Ahsoka Tano and Anakin Skywalker figures in the Disney Infinity 3.0 Starter Pack. Complimenting the already announced Rise Against the Empire (original trilogy) and Force Awakens (new films) Play Sets, both of which are sold separately, Disney Infinity 3.0 certainly looks set to offer plenty of Star Wars goodness. With the set looking good in the screenshots, we'll be keeping our fingers firmly crossed for this one. The prequel setting doesn't worry us in the slightest. After all, Episode One: Pod Racer on the N64 was a good game, and that was based on the prequels... or is it just us that remembers that?
