3D Video service launches on the 3DS today

While many are still getting to grips with Nintendo's new (optional) 3D handheld, the 3DS, Nintendo seem to be doing their utmost to keep things fresh. With the recent system update, web browser, eShop, and two free games, leading the way, Nintendo have today announced that they're going to be releasing a brand new 3D video service on the 3DS - but only if you live in Japan.

Delivering short clips of 3D video completely free of charge - though supported by adverts - the snippets will automatically be downloaded to consoles across the land of the rising sun today. Partnering with Nippon TV and Fuji Television, there's a wide range of regular content on offer, which is split into seven separate channels.

Nittele Doubutsu de Calendar

An animal program, which will show clips of animals in 3D. A new clip will be uploaded daily.

Tetsu View 3D

A (slightly nerdy) sounding train program, complete with introductions to trains and train stations. A new clip will be uploaded daily.

Magic Class 3D

Apparently more popular in Japan than it is over here, this channel shows magic tricks from famous magicians. A new clip will be uploaded daily.

Idoling Sumo 3DS

A popular girl group will take on a variety of challenges. A new clip will be uploaded daily.

Nikkan Topics

A news program. A new clip will be uploaded daily.

3D Choukoku no Mori

A look at sculptures from an outdoor sculpture museum in Hakone. A new clip will be uploaded every weekday.

Enjoy Sport

A sports program from Fuji TV. A new clip will be uploaded on Saturday and Sunday.

Although this is a service that's exclusive to Japan at the moment, the 3D Video service is set to roll out in America over the summer, and we wouldn't imagine we'll be too far behind. And while it's been confirmed that we'll be seeing a series of Shaun the Sheep 3D shorts delivered to our 3DS free of charge, the other partnerships, with Sky and Eurosport, don't sound anywhere near as exciting as footage of a new animal in 3D every day.

Make it happen, Nintendo. We don't want to have to import a Japanese 3DS just for this.
