The 2DS represents Nintendo's play for the family market this Christmas - cheap, cheerful, and very child friendly, it's a console Nintendo hopes will make an attractive proposition for those looking for something to plonk under the tree this year. With a new, wedge-shaped design that removes the hinges and makes it chunkier for younger hands, along with a new top screen that removes the (potentially dangerous for younger children) 3D effect, the 2DS initially came complete with a budget price tag of £110 - but now, with Christmas still a good two months away, the discounting has already begun.
Tesco Online, Amazon, and Sainsburys in-store are currently listing the handheld for £99 - some £10 off the RRP, making it a not too insubstantial discount for interested families, especially coming only ten days after the console launched. While specialist retailer GAME has yet to follow suit, instead attempting to sell the console at its original £109.99, it's expected that other parties will soon follow suit, prompting a mini discounting war in the run up to the busiest shopping season of the year.
Perhaps more interesting, though, is the slightly different approach other retailers are taking to competing on price. Rather than dropping the price any further, Argos will instead soon be offering an incredibly appealing bundle, packing LEGO Lord of the Rings 3DS, with Moshi Monsters: Katsuma Unleashed and a 2DS console for £99. If you want to pick that one up, you'll need to be quick, as the offer is expected to go live soon, but will expire on the 26th October - although it's certainly an incredibly tempting pressie prospect.
With discounting already beginning, it's looking to be another interesting Christmas for bargain hunters, as stores show their best hands to compete for your sales. We'll be keeping our ear to the ground for any other interesting bundles in the run up to Christmas - so make sure you keep checking back. With our test 2DS currently out for review with our test family, we'll be bringing you our comprehensive verdict on the new machine very soon - just remember, although it's called a 2DS, it can still play all your 3DS and DS games.
